Mo Faya and Lwanda, Man of Stone

The GoDown was the scene for the premier of a 21-song musical theatre piece, Lwanda, Man of Stone, in December 2006. The production was based on a local folk story and married traditional instruments and styles of the Luo people of Western Kenya with contemporary urban Kenyan sound. The production was then taken on a national tour in 2007 and 2008 playing a total of 52 shows. Under the name Mo Faya it played at the New York Musical Theatre Festival in 2009. Both these productions were projects of Rainmaker Productions run by singer-songwriter Eric Wainaina and his wife, cultural manager and Theatre, Film and Music Producer Sheba Hirst.

Eric is an alumnus of the Sundance Institute Theatre Program East Africa Initiative. Eric and Sheba currently run Rainmaker and are co-directors of the Nairobi Musical Theatre Initiative. Eric recently facilitated a music workshop for musicians from the Mukuru Youth Initiative as part of the ArtXchange program delivered by The GoDown.
